What are School Governors?

The Governors are legally-appointed volunteer advisors who support and challenge the school’s leadership. They contribute to the strategic decisions and direction of the school and have an effective input towards the educational achievement of its pupils.  The Governing Body’s overriding responsibility is to work in partnership with the Headteacher  to promote continuous improvement in the school’s performance.   The Governing Body provide an overview and Governance, but do not deal with the day to day management of the school.

The Governing Body consists of
  • The Headteacher
  • One elected Staff Governor
  • One appointed Local Authority Governor
  • Three elected Parent Governors
  • Twelve Co-opted Governors, including co-opted parents
The standard term of office for a Governor is four years.  The Chair and Vice-Chairs are elected annually at the first meeting of the academic year.

The responsibilities of the Governing Body include:
  • Being involved in planning the future direction of the school

Meeting attendance

The Governing Body meets each half term for its full Governing Body meeting.  There are also meetings for training and occasional extra meetings to discuss important issues.

We have a pay committee, HT performance team, and our Governors are linked to phase leaders to hold them to account

The Strategic Governor team  (made up of Chair and Vice Chairs) meet at the beginning of each term with the Head and SLT to discuss the areas for focus within school for that term. These meetings are also used as an opportunity to keep up to date with current issues in the school. They also plan and set the Agendas for upcoming meetings.

How to become a Governor

We actively encourage our parents to become Governors and when a vacancy arises all parents are notified and given the opportunity to volunteer.

Elections are held if more than one person is interested for each vacancy. We have a great relationship with parents and there are always people who are prepared to give their time to join us on the Governing Body.

You don’t need any special skills to become a Governor, apart from a wish to help the school, but if you do have any particular talents that you think might be useful then please let us know. Training is provided for all Governors.

If you are reading this and live nearby, but are not a parent of one of our pupils, that doesn’t prevent you from being a Governor – if you let us know of your interest then we can keep your contact details in the school office. All Governors must be able to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

If you are interested in becoming a school Governor and you would like to find out more, you can contact Debbie Miller chairofgovernors@dore.sheffield.sch.uk
