Buddhism in Y6 - RE Focus Day

posted 29 Jan 2014, 08:01 by Laura Guiton
Kate, Mark and Dave came to visit us today from the Still Learning Sheffield Buddhist Centre. We had lots of fun learning about Buddhism through a number of activities. First, we found out about the life of Siddhartha Gautama who became 'The Buddha' after he reached Enlightenment. Then, we had the opportunity to look at artefacts from the Buddhist religion, such as the Singing Bowl and the Buddhist wheel. We had to try and guess what they were used for and if they were practical objects or symbolic. Before break we tried 'stilling' exercises (a type of meditation) where we had to try and think deeply. Finally, we found out about Avalokiteśvara, a Buddha who had 1000 arms and 11 heads. We had to think about how we would like to help someone and put our message on a hand. All of the hands (from Y6 and Y2) were put together to make our own picture of the Buddha. Look carefully at the pictures to find the Buddha with (almost) 1000 hands.

This visit was paid for by the School Fund Pot.
