Oakes Weekend 2014

It is Saturday lunch-time and 55 Dore children and three staff are proving how tough they are and how muddy they can get!  It is the annual Oakes Weekend, and if anything, today's damp and rainy weather adds to the fun, although, we do hope it is a dry afternoon and evening so that we can enjoy Songs and drinking chocolate around the Campfire.

As always, we received a warm and sparkly welcome from the Oakes Team at Passport Control and were soon into the opening activities and a HOT DOG supper.  We met the team and heard an overview of the weekend before fast-paced team efforts at 'Patsy's Game.'  This rounded off the start to the camp before a good sleep in preparation for the rest of the action-packed weekend.  Since our last visit, there are great additions to the facilities and the programme. The Oakes Adventure Centre develops all the time and each new team brings along fresh ideas and enthusiasms.  This weekend the meetings are looking at the book of Jonah - each dorm had interesting enquiry discussions relating to the story.

The first activity round saw three lots of pure adventure, bravery and toughness.  A GREAT NEW feature is the mini TOUGH MUDDER! :) Children also climbed in the NEW Climbing Cube which has some very hard faces and there was great fun on the Ropes Course which has a super zip wire over the pond! :)  Another group were learning origami skills. All the children can choose three of the activities on offer during the weekend.  There is also plenty of opportunity in free time to use the Games Room, Coffee Bar, mini-golf, football field, basket swing or just to chill and chat with friends and the leaders.

2 lots of Activities on Saturday with the addition of Archery in Activity 3 slot today, Sunday. The Space Cadet Widegame last night was suitably atmospheric with swirling mist, pounding Space music and glimmers of light through the fog; you can see from the campfire photo how deep was the fog, but we had rousing singing and the comfort of hot chocolate.  Bedtime was 'EPIC' according to dorm leaders as sleep came instantly to all :) We are ready for what today brings!
