Our small orienteering team competed in the South Yorkshire orienteering league for schools on Saturday at Millhouses Park.  In weather ranging from bright sun to hailstones and in chilly conditions our team raced the course and keep their position in the top three in all of the age groups. Many CONGRATULATIONS to Rachel Turner who is lying first overall in her age group and William O'Hanlon who lies overall second.  The team was joined by 2 new members this week, Harry Mitchell and Sam Donnelly.  Well done to all the team but especially to Harry and Sam who did very well in their first race!
Orienteering is becoming quite a feature at our school and makes great use of our wonderful extensive school grounds. Mrs. Davis operates an orienteering club in the summer months; it also features in our PE curriculum, sports days and some residentials. We are looking for MORE members to join our school team! :)  The orienteering school league (run by SYO - see below) has 10 events spread through all three school terms and all taking place in local venues such as Weston Park, Ecclesall Woods.
In recognition of this, the DPA has kindly agreed to buy the electronic timing and marker equipment you will see featured in the photos below. This adds great excitement and helpful feedback as each participant can receive a print-out of their checking-in points and of their split times.   This will be used in lessons and the club and will enable the school to be a host fixture in friendly schools matches.
Dore itself has a keen band of people who enjoy orienteering and during the Dore Festival the school acts as host and base to the Dore Orienteering event.  South Yorkshire Orienteers do a GREAT job in promoting this sport and members have been in to help get DPS started in this exciting sport which mixes running with navigational and mapwork skills!
WE VERY MUCH HOPE TO BUILD OUR DORE TEAM - independent runners from Y3-Y6, but younger children are very welcome to participate with adults - it is very much a family sport too!
The last three races of the year take place on:
17th May at Norfolk Park - 1 p.m.
7th June at Bingham Park - 1p.m.
29th June at Graves Park - 1 p.m.            It will be brilliant if more families can join us! :)
