Summer of Sporting Success

This summer, our children have had an amazingly successful summer of sport.  Well over 100 children have represented the school across a range of sports.

Y3/4 Hockey
Back in May, two teams of Y3 and Y4 children represented the school in the Sheffield 'Quicksticks' Hockey competition at Abbeydale.  Despite many of the children having never played competitively before, the teams did really well, with one of the teams qualifying for the South Yorkshire School Games Summer Finals competition.  At this country level event in July, they again did brilliantly, finishing 5th overall.

Y3-6 Swimming
Just before we broke up for Spring-bank half term, our swimming team won the 'B' Division Sheffield Schools Swimming Relay Championships at Ponds Forge, winning six of the ten events.  Victory means we have been promoted to the 'A' Division for next year.

Y5/6 Athletics
On returning from the Spring-bank holiday, a team of 30 Y5 and Y6 children entered the City Athletics heats at Woodbourn Road Stadium.  Prior to this we had selected the team through encouraging all children to try all the events in an afternoon on King Ecgbert's playing fields.  At the heats, the children performed brilliantly, and out of 42 possible qualifiers, we qualified for 27 city final events.  In the finals the children were again a credit to the school, with several 2nd and 3rd place finishes, as well as a victory (therefore becoming city champion) in the Y5 girls' 60m sprint.

Y5 Kwik Cricket
June was the month for cricket, with Y5 children representing the school in the South-West Sheffield round of the City Kwik Cricket Competition.  The mixed boys and girls team won every match they played in a one-off competition, and the girls' and boys' teams qualified comfortably for the City Finals.  At the Girls' City Finals, our team got better with every game they played, and qualified for the final, where they were beaten by a very strong Greenhill team.  The day after, our boys' team also qualified for the final, also against a very strong Greenhill team.  This time the result was different, with the boys performing superbly to beat Greenhill and become city champions.  This means they have now qualified for the Yorkshire round of this competition, which will take place next summer.

Y5 Westbourne Rounders and Cricket Competition
Alongside the city competitions, two teams of Y5s attended the annual Westbourne Rounders and Cricket competition, performing very well and winning several of their games.  For many children in the teams, this was their first experience of competitive sport, and they represented the school fantastically well, playing with spirit and showing great teamwork and sportsmanship.

KS2 Abbeydale Badminton Challenge
Alongside all this outdoor sporting activity, we took three teams to the Abbeydale Badminton Challenge.  We have a strong link with Abbeydale Badminton Club, with many of our children attending their in-school and evening and weekend coaching sessions.  Many of our children have represented Sheffield and Yorkshire in badminton over the last few years because of these links.  It was therefore not a surprise that we performed well in this competition.  The boys' 'A' team won their event, with the girls' team and the boys' 'B' squad also performing well, meaning we finished second overall.

THANK YOU to all the parents, teachers and support staff who have given up time to coach and take the children to the many events we have attended this year.  It is a pleasure to work in such a supportive and cooperative community.
