"Congratulations! Dore Primary School has been nominated by Parliament’s 2015 Anniversaries Team to represent your constituency in an exciting national initiative run by the Houses of Parliament. Due to your previous engagement with Parliament by way of visits to us, we would like to extend this invitation of participation to you. We have informed your local MP Rt Hon Nick Clegg of your nomination.

In 2015 Parliament will be celebrating two historic anniversaries that signify the beginnings of a journey to rights and representation in the UK, namely the 800th year of the sealing of Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort Parliament.

To mark the anniversary of the Montfort Parliament of 1265, where elected representatives of the shires and the Burgesses came together for the first time, Parliament is inviting 650 schools, one from every constituency, to design a flag to represent where they live."       Parliament's 2015 Anniversary Team.

We have just submitted our flag and feel honoured to be selected for this national initiative which underlines our commitment and vision to educating our children to be responsible and caring global citizens prepared for life in Modern Britain.  As part of our GUS (Growing Up Skills) programme Y3-Y6 Dore pupils learn about local and national government, the European Union and the United Nations.  All of our pupils have an understanding of democracy through our annual voting and ongoing work with the Dore Democrats (school council). Significant numbers of Dore pupils and their parents have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament once during their time in school. Our pupils are encouraged to raise awareness of local issues with our MP Nick Clegg, both at his constituency surgery and in visits to our school.  Our flag will be displayed online from March 2015 in a specially designated anniversary site and may be chosen as one of 60 to be made into a flag which will fly in Westminster as part of the 2015 celebrations! :)

Our flag represents Sheffield City of Steel with a grey panel on which rests  2 forks representing our city heritage of cutlery and steel manufacture. Sheffield football teams United and Wednesday have their place in the club colours of blue and red panels and the green panel stands for the beautiful countryside of Blackamoor and the Peak District which lay right beside our school in the constituency of Hallam. In 2013 we thoroughly enjoyed a whole school study project  to  celebrate 100 years of stainless steel in Sheffield and the learning from this was displayed in a huge creative exhibition in the Dore community; this inspired our flag. Two of our Y6 pupils, Erica and Natalie worked on this design expertly guided by Mrs. Fielding and Mr. Steve Smith as the technical criteria was very exacting! See the planning stages in files below.
