Time travel in Y5

posted 9 Dec 2013, 08:29 by Sian Granville
On Friday, the whole of Y5 travelled back in time to the Victorian schoolroom. Two VERY strict teachers turned up and insisted on inspecting hands and finger nails before demanding a penny to teach the children! Once in the classroom, girls and boys were seated in rows, separately, and were expected to stand when addressing the teacher. During the morning the children practiced their copperplate hand-writing with ink and Victorian nib pens as well as writing their times tables on the slates. There was also recitation, to help them to develop a good speaking voice and then the school inspector arrived! He was extremely demanding, firing questions at the children, checking their work and unfortunately several fell short of his high expectations and, well, best not to ask really........

At the end of the morning, when the two Victorian teachers had left, we all agreed we much prefer school in 2013!
