Women of Steel

posted 17 Jun 2016, 07:54 by hleach@dore.sheffield.sch.uk

As recognition of fund raising in previous years, Dore Primary was invited to take part in the unveiling ceremony for the Sheffield 'Women of Steel' statue near the City Hall. The day very much focused on the contribution made by local women to keeping the steel industry going during the difficult war years when the men were away fighting. Following the 'cloth pull', the children had the very important job of presenting commemorative medallions to surviving relatives. We had never seen so many people in Barkers Pool - there was a real buzz of excitement and lots of interest from television and radio reporters. The children were a real credit to the school and will no doubt look back to being there on an important day for the city.
