To prepare the way for the excitement of London Olympics 2012 children in the Junior School worked with our artist in residence Claire Tinker linking art with the Olympic games as happened in the past.  We held our own art exhibition in November 2011 inviting parents and members of the local community along.  Barron Pierre Coubertin who is considered to be the father of the Modern Olympics promoted the idea of union between sport and art. He wanted to merge competitions in sports with competition in the arts integrating art and culture into the Olympic movement. Between 1912 and 1948 art competitions were held at the Olympics and the winners were awarded gold silver and bronze medals similar to the athletic competitors. The art competitions were organised into five different areas of the arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, music and literature. We are planning many other activities as this exciting summer in the UK approaches.  Some classes are already exploring paralympic games in their PE lessons.
