Music and Peripatetic Music Lessons

Music is a vibrant part of our creative curriculum and linking with dance it permeates all of our creative curriculum themes so that children can enjoy listening to, moving to, reflecting upon, playing music and composing as a natural part of their learning.  We very much value the input of children who have extra music lessons to play an instrument or to sing as part of our curriculum learning and in extra-curricular practices and concerts.  All musicians are given the opportunity to perform in our end of term concerts in Infants and in Juniors.
Dore Primary School is proud to be assessed as a CHAMPION Music School by The Sheffield Music Hub.

Singing - Dore is a singing school!  Every child enjoys singing together in dedicated time every Thursday by our own enthusiastic and experienced staff.  We use Sing Up materials, seasonal songs and those for our themes and concerts. All children get an opportunity to perform in termly concerts in F2 and KS1 and in an annual performance assembly in KS2.

Wider Opportunities - All children in Y3 receive Violin lessons as part of the music curriculum. We hope that with this starter taster our pupils will enjoy and be enthused by this opportunity and wish to continue with the violin or to choose to have lessons in a different instrument.

CHOIRS  Mr. Ian Faraday is our pianist, composer and choir leader ably supported by Mr. Goodwin KS2 choir, Miss Atkinson and Miss Maiden KS1 choir.  Our choirs regularly perform in concerts and for our parents. The choir is open to every child who wishes to be a regular lunch-time member.

Sing-Up  We also operate special Sing-Up choirs which are led by Nick Cox of Sheffield Cathedral ably supported by Alex Hayward-Browne. Sing-up is in partnership with the Sheffield Music Hub.  Sing-Up choir meets every week and there are special invites to our gifted and talented singers, our vulnerable children and children from classes in rotation.  Every child will have the opportunity to be in the Sing-Up Choir as they move through the Junior School. The Sing-Up choir has performed in the launch concert of the Sheffield Music Hub, Emil and the Detective Children's Opera at Firth Hall - Sheffield University, the Opening Ceremony of the UK Schools Sports at Sheffield Arena, a Christmas CD in aid of the Children's Hospital & Sing-Up which is a charity; the latest project was to sing at the launch of the new Sheffield RE syllabus in July 2014.

KS2 Musical  Each summer term, every child in KS2 has the opportunity to perform in a musical extravaganza. Recent productions have been A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.

Performances There are MANY opportunities for pupils to perform right through the school with regular concerts, assemblies and clubs such as Open Mike. There is a very wide range of Musical Opportunity and in 2015 TEAM Dore held its first Musical Soiree.

Orchestra  We have a fledgling orchestra run by Mrs. Emma Waggot who also teaches piano in our school.  We welcome new players who have been learning instruments for one year to join this growing group.

The New Music Curriculum  The music programme of study for the 2014 National Curriculum is available at the bottom of this page.  Also available are the musical skills documents for our school, which show the expected progression in musical understanding from Years 1 to 6.

Peripatetic Music lessons
Dore Primary School is now providing peripatetic music lessons in partnership with the Sheffield Music Hub.  From April 2014 parents need to pay for a child's individual music lessons using our school Parent Pay facility.  Payments are made in advance by half-term or termly block as advertised.  A full half-term's notice must be given before lessons cease. We are looking forward to a new partnership with Sheffield Music Hub from September 2014 in which more children will be reached by specialist music teachers during curriculum time.  Currently lessons taking place during school time are in: keyboard; brass; cello; violin; guitar; flute and singing.

All applications, queries, notices for stopping lessons and invoices must be negotiated directly now with Miss Amy Breen our Extended Schools Lead - abreen@dore.sheffield.sch.uk.  Please contact your own child's specialist music teacher if you have a query regarding the music tuition as opposed to the administration of lessons. Thank you :)
N.B. If a music teacher is poorly the lesson will be made up in one of the spare weeks.  Following the policy of the Sheffield Music Hub if a lesson is missed for another reason this is non-refundable.  Over the course of the year your child will receive 33 lessons.
